About Us Club Sailing Schedule Event Information
The Club sailing events are divided into two categories; Laser Fleet for both Juniors and Seniors (including Lasers, Laser II’s, and open centreboards) and Keelboats. A brief description of each of the events follows. To view the annual Schedule, click here.

1. Series Races:

Each of the fleets has 8 or more races that are scheduled throughout the summer. For scoring purposes we will drop the two worst races of the total races sailed for the season.

Junior racers have four competition categories; female 14 and under, male 14 and under, female 18 and under and male 18 and under.

Please note the starting times on the schedule. Races will be started on time with few exceptions.

Please use courtesy on the course, particularly when we have multiple fleets. The possibility for various fleets rounding together, etc. will exist because of the larger number of boats on the course. Keep an eye out for other boats!

The start sequence will be a 6 minute start with subsequent fleets starting on a three minute cycle. Here is the planned start sequence:

Time Signals Flags Who Starts
00:00 Minutes - Warning Signal White Flag
02:00 Minutes - Flag Down
03:00 Minutes - Preparatory Signal Blue Flag
05.00 Minutes - Flag down
06:00 Minutes - First Start Red Flag Usually Lasers
08:00 Minutes - Flag down
09:00 Minutes - Second Start Green Flag Usually Laser 2’s , etc.

Please note that if a particular fleet is not participating in a race, the other fleets move up in the starting order. Also, in the event of a recall at the start, the starting order will be maintained and the next signal from the committee boat will indicate three minutes until the start.

Dinghies will sail a modified Olympic course. This will allow us to moor the committee boat and remain in one location. After the start all boats must not enter the area between the committee boat and the starting/finishing mark. The consequence is disqualification!!

Keelboats will sail windward/leeward courses, twice around (downwind finish). As above, this will allow us to moor the committee boat and remain in one location, without moving about.

The course is subject to change so check in at the committee boat for last minute updates.

2. Social Events and other Activities

There are a number of activities run by the club every year. This is a great way to meet up with old friends and also meet new people in the area. The School work parties for the sailing school are on the schedule, and we encourage you to particpate as we rely on volunteers to get the school ready and close up at the end of the year. The School Open house is also an annual event on the schedule. It’s a great way to show off our sailing school to friends and encourage more participation in the school.

Don’t miss the Final party and fundraiser!

3. Muskoka Laser District Championships:

SMSC invites Laser racers to Muskoka to challenge our club racers at this annual event. The competition will certainly be tough so don’t miss it. .

4. MLA Sailing Regatta (all fleets):

The Muskoka Lakes Association’s annual regatta attracts a wide range of racers in many classes of boats. There are separate starts for each class with prizes for the top three finishers. Let’s ensure SMSC once again wins the Commodore’s Cup!

In 2004, it is expected that the first ever Optimist Dinghies will sail at the MLA Regatta! Our junior racers will be represented. Please visit http://www.mla.on.ca/ for more information.

5. Club Championships:

Each fleet holds a three-race event to determine the fleet’s club champion. The events have a long tradition and always have a high level of participation. Awards are presented at the final banquet.

6. September Trophy and Turkey Race (Keelboats):

After the dinghies are stowed away, sailors can join in these two September races. Winds will be strong – a great opportunity for a final blast! And because the coveted Turkey Flag is at stake, you will not want to miss the final event of the season.
