Marvin MaGee, Commodore

While the lineage of the MaGee family can be traced through four generations of cottagers on the lakes of Joe and Muskoka, our family actually located on Eileen Gowan Island in the late 1980's. It has been more than 15 years of unforgettable summers with an expanding circle of friends that make up our community of South Muskoka. The fates smiled on us with an early introduction to the SMSC . First were the student years , followed by keel and dingy racing and finally we were able to repay the club as instructors and volunteers. While the sailing is great, the friendships for all the members of our family has been the real prize.

Geoffrey Roche, "Vice-Comm"

When not racing competitively off the shores of Madagascar, Geoffrey Roche can be found on beautiful Lake Muskoka, serving as Vice-Commodore, or "Vice-Comm" as he prefers, for the Sailing Club. In Muskoka, Geoffrey prefers not to race. "I have an unfair advantage," Geoffrey says. He claims that other sailors would need a 26-minute handicap in order to beat him. Such outrageous claims are the norm for this extreme sailor: some say that the stress of Ocean Racing has made him go insane. Every year at the summer's final party, young sailors gather round while Geoffrey famously recalls that one day in 1983 when he almost won the Tornado World Championship.

Bill Sceviour, Past Commodore

Bill is a long-time Muskoka cottager on Eilean Gowan Island. He's the former SMSC Sailing School Director, Vice-Commodore, Commodore and now Past Commodore of SMSC. Bill is experienced in Albacore and Laser dinghy sailing. He has also crewed extensively on the the J22 and J24. Bill attended the J-World Sailing School in Key West, Florida and again on Muskoka. Bill and wife Carol have two children, Jeff and Jennifer, both of whom have trained to Silver Sail level at SMSC and have subsequently become instructors at the school.

Bill is a Professional Engineer and President of Versatel Printing, one of our long-standing SMSC sponsors.

Duncan Hannay, Director - Sailing School

Duncan has been an avid sailor and Muskoka cottager for over 30 years. He attended the South Muskoka Sailing School from age 9 through 15, and credits his parents, David and Peggy Sturch, and the Moody family for his love of the sport. Duncan went on to teach at SMSS, and sailed on the Ontario Youth Sailing Team. His competitive sailing achievements culminated in 1985, when he and Jeff Moody won the Canadian Albacore Sailing Championship in a fleet of 60 boats.

Today, Duncan and his wife Kathy are cottagers on Walker's Point. All three of their children attend the South Muskoka Sailing School. Duncan is an active participant in the weekend keelboat racing.

Jeff Moody, Assistant Director - Sailing School

Judy Cadieux, Treasurer

Judy, a native Montrealer, sailed as a youngster at the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club where she attended sailing school and perfected the art of avoiding dumping in Lake St Louis. Judy has been enjoying cottaging on Lake Muskoka since 1999, has two children in the sailing program and is an avid Hobie sailor.

Rob Payne, Trophy and Dinghy Coordinator

Rob is looking forward to his 50th summer in Muskoka ,along with his wife and two children.

Rob achieved early racing success at the provincial and national level in the Albacore and Laser class. A former sailing instructor, he can claim to a family lineage of such accomplished racers such as David Sturch.

However ,despite such early promise, in recent years he has been reduced to a supporting role in the small but active Laser fleet to the likes of Charlie Colman and Michael Hart.

Ever a student of the sport, he is currently studying the effects of weight gain on race performance. His Motto? "Wait until next year!".
